My fiancé David and I moved back to Perth from a two year stint in NZ, and just happened to drive past a local CrossFit box so we thought we’d check it out and see what CrossFit was all about. I was fresh from retiring my professional Netball career back home and needed something to take the edge off my competitive side that was starting to replenish itself.
I’m not coaching right now but you’ll definitely see me around the Box. Larissa makes it sound so easy… “just check out” the local box she says… My version is that it took months of nagging until she finally relented. You don’t get if you don’t ask, but you shouldn’t have to ask that many times!
Signed up at the local box, and happy to say after not too long we were hooked! What blossomed was an extremely competitive relationship that was full of solid team work, the occasional dummy spit and silent car ride home when someone got pipped at the line on a particular WOD. We started thinking about opening our own box after a holiday through Canada and checking out what they had to offer.
We came home and thought “yeah we can do this” with Larrissa wanting to give back and help others with all she had learnt and experienced during her professional netball career.
Just 6 months after all the freedom’s in the world Larrissa fell pregnant with our first child. Whilst absolutely ecstatic with a bub on the way the dream of starting our own CrossFit gym suddenly got put on hold. No worries we thought, we’ll just keep training and keep the thought at the back of our minds. During this time David had taken up weightlifting as a sport and Larrissa proved to everyone that you can do crossfit right up until the week your baby born!
From when our spark was lit for our Box owning dream we came to a crossroads, we either do it now or let the idea go. With bubs 6 months old we did what no sane parents would do… we went for it, the desire to help other achieve their goals in fitness and in life was burning stronger than ever. CrossFit 6100 was born. It’s been a bumpy road setting up, juggling work commitments with baby commitments but success is never easy.
The goal is still the same, to create a stronger, fitter, happier, healthier you.
Without so many words you can see just how much equipment and effort goes into building a gym from an empty shell warehouse. Pull up bar builds, rower assembly and many trades all combine to bring you Perth’s best CrossFit experience.
Saturday June 22 saw our Grand Opening with a great turn out of many long time CrossFit enthusiasts. Here is the Official WOD #1!
